MOOKAITE FUN FACTS

Updated: Aug 8

Here at Crystal D’Lites we just love our Mookaite (pronounced mook a ite).

"Mookaite" only known source is Mooka Creek, on the western side of the Kennedy Ranges, 180 kilometres east from Carnarvon and approximately 1046 kilometres north of Perth.

The name mookaite is derived from the locality where it is found, Mooka Creek.  According to locals, the Aboriginal name mooka means “running waters”.

Mookaite has been quarried from the area since the mid 1960's by local specimen miners. As of 2013, three specimen miners hold leases over most of the area. The area mined is restricted to a small zone along Mooka Creek, east of the Mardathuna Track and is off-limits to fossickers, as they are leased by specimen miners.

Keep your eyes on our new additions over the coming weeks as I finally get to add some new mookaite to our shop (at this stage its mainly raw, slabs and a couple of spheres, but I will be working hard behind the scenes to get other pieces as quickly as I can).

We are blessed that our newest supplier of all things “Specimens, Aussie and some rarer materials” is one of the lease holders of the mookaite mine.  They are a small family run business that mine their own minerals (mookaite is just the tip of the iceberg)  as well as trading their finds with other miners overseas to let people like me supply people like you with some absolutely mind-blowing pieces at what we believe are a fantastic price.

Here are some photos of the Mooka Mine 😊
